i don't want to get into a habit of increasing contrast/levels/etc for most of my photos (this is the first time (apart from a greyscale) that i've 'altered' anything from the original)

It looks a lot more dynamic than that; it looks like you're in a swarm of rushing water...small water droplets all over the place. Nice post processing; it adds a lot of surrealism to the photo.
